Ravens suspend WR Diontae Johnson weeks after acquiring him from Panthers

The Baltimore Ravens made headlines weeks ago with their acquisition of wide receiver Diontae Johnson from the Carolina Panthers, but his time in Baltimore has been far from smooth. In the latest twist, the Ravens have suspended Johnson for one game due to conduct detrimental to the team.

The suspension stems from Johnson’s refusal to enter last week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, as detailed in a statement from Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta. The decision was described as “difficult” but necessary.

Baltimore’s bye week in Week 14 means the suspension will take effect in Week 15 when the Ravens face the New York Giants. This marks a low point in what has been an underwhelming tenure for Johnson since his arrival.

Traded alongside a sixth-round pick in exchange for a fifth-rounder, Johnson has played just 39 snaps across four games, recording one catch for 6 yards on five targets.

The situation came to a head in the loss to the Eagles, where Johnson did not take a single snap despite the injury absence of No. 2 receiver Rashod Bateman. Reports now confirm this was Johnson’s decision, prompting speculation and criticism.

Head coach John Harbaugh offered little clarity postgame, only stating on Monday, “There are moving parts we’re going to have to figure out and explore.”

This dramatic downturn is a sharp contrast to Johnson’s prior success. During his five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he logged 391 receptions, 4,363 yards, and 25 touchdowns.

He was traded to Carolina last offseason as part of a deal for cornerback Donte Jackson and performed solidly earlier this year, catching 30 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns.
