Fiji Airways Men’s 7s Eye World Series Glory with Strong Start as Financial Rewards Loom
The Fiji Airways Men’s 7s team is showing promising form early in the World Rugby Sevens Series, sparking hopes for a title-winning season. If they continue their momentum and clinch the World Series title next year, financial rewards could be a possibility. Fiji last won the title during the 2018/2019 season.
Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, emphasized that while discussions on incentives are yet to take place, the team is in a rebuilding phase and remains focused on consistent improvement. He praised their recent triumph in the Dubai 7s final against Spain as a significant step in the right direction.
“They’re leading the series right now, and it’s been a long time coming. Hopefully, they’ll maintain this form and improve throughout the season. The government will always be ready to support them,” Saukuru stated.
The team’s resurgence under the guidance of head coach and former captain Osea Kolinisau has instilled confidence in their ability to reclaim Fiji’s dominance in international rugby sevens.
This weekend, the Cape Town 7s tournament will test their mettle again. Fiji is set to face Uruguay at 12:38 a.m. Sunday, followed by Great Britain at 4:19 a.m. Meanwhile, the Fijiana 7s team plays USA at 7 p.m. Saturday, followed by Great Britain at 10:16 p.m.
