Lakers Eye Dynamic Guard Dennis Smith Jr. as Potential Midseason Addition Amid Roster Shakeups

The Los Angeles Lakers have started to find their footing this season, rediscovering their defensive identity and translating it into more efficient offensive possessions. One intriguing option is Dennis Smith Jr., a former ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Smith, who recently signed with the Milwaukee Bucks’ G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, has expressed interest in joining the Lakers. During a recent appearance on The OGs Show, Smith mentioned the Lakers as a team he believes he could contribute to immediately.

“Everybody can use a dawg,” Smith said. “I think the Spurs, Minnesota, Miami, obviously… or the Lakers. I think I could come in and make a real contribution.”

Smith has had a tumultuous NBA journey, moving between several teams before finding a steady role with the Brooklyn Nets last season. Known for his athleticism, Smith has the ability to provide energy and defensive intensity. However, his lack of size and inconsistent outside shooting could make him a challenging fit for a Lakers team that needs size and shooting on the perimeter.

Despite these concerns, Smith could become a viable option for Los Angeles if they make moves at the trade deadline that open up a roster spot. As a low-cost free agent, he offers potential upside and could fill a short-term role. Still, it remains more likely that Smith finds a home with another team better suited to his skill set.
