Broncos Playmaker Ezra Mam Sidelined Until Round 10 Following Off-Field Controversy

Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam has resumed training ahead of the 2025 NRL season but won’t return to the field until at least Round 10. The 21-year-old is serving a suspension following a late-2024 off-field incident where he was involved in a road accident and subsequently tested positive for drugs. The incident resulted in an $850 fine and a six-month licence suspension in December.

Following the legal proceedings, Mam spent four weeks in a rehabilitation facility and took up work on a job site before facing court. The NRL penalized him with a nine-game suspension and a $30,000 fine, while the Broncos added their own $90,000 sanction. Speculation arose that Mam might play reserve-grade matches in the QLD Cup during his suspension, but the NRL confirmed this is not permitted. Additionally, the All Stars game—where Mam would have represented the Indigenous team—cannot count towards his suspension.

Mam’s unavailability impacts Brisbane’s opening rounds, as he will miss clashes against high-profile teams like the Sydney Roosters, Canberra Raiders, and Penrith Panthers. His return is scheduled for the Round 10 match against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, though he may initially be confined to reserve grade if the Broncos establish successful new combinations in his absence.

The arrival of Ben Hunt bolsters Brisbane’s halves options. Hunt is expected to partner captain Adam Reynolds, while Blake Mozer is set for an expanded role at dummy half alongside Billy Walters or Tyson Smoothy. The club’s depth includes versatile players such as Cory Paix, who can cover hooker and the halves, and emerging talent Coby Black. Jock Madden and Josh Rodgers also remain potential options, giving coach Kevin Walters a range of choices as the team aims to rebound from a challenging 2024 season.
