The San Francisco 49ers just missed an opportunity to secure a quality defensive coordinator as Jeff Ulbrich has reportedly agreed to join the Atlanta Falcons as their next DC, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Ulbrich was considered a fallback option for the 49ers if they failed to rehire Robert Saleh, who is exploring head coaching opportunities with teams like the Raiders, Jaguars, and Cowboys.

This development highlights the ticking clock the 49ers face as other teams quickly secure top defensive minds. Dennis Allen, for instance, is rumored to replace Aaron Glenn in Detroit if Glenn becomes a head coach, leaving the pool of available talent increasingly thin.

Saleh remains the 49ers’ preferred choice due to his proven excellence, but failing to land him could lead to undesirable alternatives. Promoting Brandon Staley, for instance, would be a controversial move. Staley’s record as the Chargers’ head coach included underwhelming defensive performances, and he was part of the 49ers’ defensive staff this season under Nick Sorensen, who was recently let go. If Staley couldn’t assist in improving the defense before, it’s difficult to envision him succeeding as the unit’s leader.

A more viable option might have been Steve Wilks, a respected coach who unfortunately seems out of reach due to lingering tensions. Wilks was blamed for the team’s most recent Super Bowl loss, leaving little hope for reconciliation.
