Milwaukee Bucks all-star Damian Lillard had hoped to become the third player to ever win three consecutive three-point contests, but the Oakland native fell short of advancing to the final in scoring 18 points in the opening round Saturday night in San Francisco.

Whitnall High School alumnus and Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro edged Lillard in the first round with 19 points to advance to the final, and then Herro went on to capture his first title by topping Golden State’s Buddy Hield and Cleveland’s Darius Garland in the final round.

Herro finished with 24 points and Hield had 23.

“I feel like a lot of great shooters, a lot of great players, some of the greats to play this game have won this award — not award, this competition,” Herro said afterward. “Just happy to put my name in the history books for all-star weekend.”

Only Larry Bird (1986-88) and Craig Hodges (1990-92) have won three in a row. Lillard joined Ray Allen (2001) as the only Bucks players to claim the title when he won it last year in Indianapolis.
