Joe O’Connor delivered a stunning performance to overpower Shaun Murphy 5-1 in the World Open quarter-finals, leaving the former world champion in awe of his display. O’Connor, a former junior pool champion who transitioned to snooker, demonstrated his ability not just to compete with the world’s best but to dominate them when in peak form.

The 29-year-old from Leicester produced a masterclass, compiling breaks of 135, 132, and 100 to secure his spot in only his fourth ranking semi-final. Murphy, who has been a professional since 1998, was highly complimentary of his opponent’s brilliance.

“It was truly remarkable,” Murphy admitted. “I told him after the game that it was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen from anyone, ever. I can count on one hand the number of times someone has played that well against me in any match, anywhere.”

O’Connor appreciated Murphy’s gracious response, revealing that the veteran encouraged him to go all the way. “He told me to win it,” O’Connor said. “He called it a phenomenal performance and said I deserved the victory. If I keep playing like this, why can’t I go all the way? The challenge is maintaining this level.”

His dominant display was built on excellent long potting and clinical break-building, which effectively shut Murphy out of the contest. With this momentum, O’Connor now sets his sights on his semi-final clash against Ali Carter, hoping to edge closer to his maiden ranking title. His only previous appearance in a ranking final came in the 2022 Scottish Open, where he lost 9-2 to Gary Wilson.

Reflecting on his current form, O’Connor expressed confidence in his game. “Coming into the tournament, I knew I was playing well. Now, everything is coming together, and I’m getting closer to my best. If I play at my best, I believe I can beat anyone on tour. My focus now is just on the next match, the next ball—one step at a time.”
