Fijian Drua Prospects & Rising Star Apete Narogo Chase Fiji 7s Selection for Hong Kong Showdown
Swire Shipping Fijian Drua development squad members, fullback Isikeli Basiyalo and fly-half Aisea Nawai, along with Apete Narogo from Semi Radradra’s Ubuntu team, are vying for spots in the Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s 7s team.
Head coach Osea Kolinisau has acknowledged the power and speed that the Drua players bring but emphasized that their background alone will not guarantee selection. He has been in discussions with Glen Jackson, the Drua head coach, regarding opportunities for the players to gain game time. However, Kolinisau made it clear that inclusion in the national squad will depend solely on their performance and adaptability to the 7s format.
“If they prove to be the right fit and meet the standards required, I won’t hesitate to select them,” Kolinisau stated.
Adding further competition to the squad is 23-year-old Apete Narogo, whose recent performances for Ubuntu have captured the attention of Fiji’s coaching staff. His standout display at the Fiji Bitter Nahehevia 7s, where he was named the best player of the tournament, showcased his potential as a valuable addition to the team. Recognizing his talent, the Fiji 7s coaches recommended a closer evaluation of Narogo’s abilities.
With three weeks remaining until the Hong Kong 7s, Kolinisau and his coaching staff have sufficient time to assess these new contenders. The selection process will be rigorous, ensuring that only the best-suited players make the final cut. The competition for places in the squad remains intense, with each player having the opportunity to prove their worth on the field.
