The trajectory of the Milwaukee Bucks franchise took a dramatic turn in 2013 when a young, lanky teenager from Greece arrived in the NBA. Selected 15th overall in the draft, Giannis Antetokounmpo was an unpolished talent with immense potential. Over the years, he evolved into a two-time MVP, a Defensive Player of the Year, and the heart of the Bucks organization. His dominance culminated in 2021, when he led Milwaukee to its first NBA championship in 50 years, solidifying his place among the franchise’s all-time greats.
However, as with any superstar, discussions about his future are inevitable.
A Commitment to Winning
Antetokounmpo has spent his entire NBA career in Milwaukee, but he has always maintained that winning takes precedence over loyalty.
> “I always envisioned myself in Milwaukee for a long time,” he stated. “I want to be like Tim Duncan, like Kobe [Bryant]—guys who stayed with one team and won championships. But at the end of the day, before loyalty, winning comes first.”
While he hasn’t explicitly suggested leaving, his stance signals a deep desire to remain in championship contention. The Bucks have been consistent contenders during his tenure, but the NBA landscape is constantly shifting. No team stays dominant forever, and Antetokounmpo is not willing to settle for mediocrity.
At 30 years old, he remains in his prime, and Milwaukee is well aware of the challenge of keeping him satisfied. Stephen Curry is currently the only superstar in the NBA who has spent his entire career with one franchise. As much as Antetokounmpo wants to build his legacy in Wisconsin, he will not hesitate to explore other options if Milwaukee fails to stay competitive.
Milwaukee’s Struggles and Investments
The Bucks have worked tirelessly to keep Antetokounmpo at the center of their championship aspirations. Before his arrival, the franchise had struggled to regain dominance since their 1971 championship run led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson.
During the 1980s, they were consistently competitive, making seven straight conference semifinals or finals appearances from 1981 to 1987. However, they repeatedly fell short against the Celtics, 76ers, and Pistons. The following decades saw the franchise sink into mediocrity, unable to build a sustainable championship-contending team—until Antetokounmpo emerged as their savior.
Recognizing his importance, Milwaukee has made significant financial commitments to him. In December 2020, he signed a five-year, $228 million extension, then the largest contract in NBA history. This was followed by another three-year, $186 million extension in October 2023, reinforcing the franchise’s determination to keep him.
However, Antetokounmpo remains vocal about his expectations.

Milwaukee got the message loud and clear. Ahead of the 2023-24 season, the Bucks made a major move by trading for Damian Lillard, pairing Antetokounmpo with one of the league’s most elite scorers. The blockbuster deal cost them Jrue Holiday, a key part of their 2021 championship squad, but it signaled their commitment to staying in the mix for the title.
The Uncertain Future
Despite the aggressive moves, the question remains: Will it be enough?
In the modern NBA, player movement is more unpredictable than ever. While Antetokounmpo’s extension ties him to Milwaukee through at least 2026-27, nothing is ever guaranteed. If the Bucks falter in their pursuit of another title, he may explore other opportunities—just as countless superstars have before him.
For now, Milwaukee remains his home, but in a league driven by winning, the clock is always ticking.
