Bill Chisholm Acquires Celtics in Record $6.1B Deal – Is a New Era of Dominance Coming?
On Thursday, the Boston Celtics entered a new chapter in franchise history as private equity director William “Bill” Chisholm became the team’s newest controlling owner. Acquiring a majority stake in the legendary franchise at a record-setting valuation of $6.1 billion, Chisholm is set to gradually take over from Wyc Grousbeck and the current ownership group. However, Grousbeck will remain involved in the organization, continuing to serve as team governor throughout the transition period.
Following the announcement, Chisholm made his first public statement as the incoming Celtics owner through Business Wire. He spoke of his deep connection to the team, having grown up on Boston’s North Shore and attended college in New England. “I have been a die-hard Celtics fan my entire life,” he stated. “I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston – the role the team plays in the community is different than any other city in the country.”
Acknowledging the responsibility that comes with leading such a storied franchise, Chisholm expressed gratitude toward the Grousbeck family for their contributions over the past 23 years. He also emphasized his excitement to work alongside head coach Joe Mazzulla, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens, and the entire Celtics staff. His mission, he made clear, is to build upon the team’s recent success and bring more championships to Boston.
Grousbeck, who has overseen the Celtics since 2002—including the team’s 2008 NBA Championship—voiced strong support for Chisholm. “Bill is a terrific person and a true Celtics fan,” he said. “His love for the team and the city of Boston, along with his chemistry with the rest of the Celtics leadership, make him a natural choice to be the next Governor and controlling owner.” Grousbeck will remain in his leadership role for the next three years at Chisholm’s request, ensuring a smooth transition.
As Chisholm steps into his new role, fans will be eager to see what direction he takes the franchise. Will he maintain the Celtics’ current approach, or will he implement changes to bring even more success to the team? One thing is certain—Boston’s commitment to winning remains as strong as ever.
