Former Texas Longhorns Running Back Savion Red Enters Transfer Portal Again After Season at Nevada
AUSTIN — Savion Red, the former Texas Longhorns running back, is back in the NCAA transfer portal after spending one season with the Nevada Wolf Pack. The Grand Prairie, Texas native made the announcement on social media Tuesday, thanking the University of Nevada, Reno, for the opportunity and expressing gratitude to the community, coaching staff, and teammates.
Red initially transferred to Nevada last offseason, joining former Texas assistant Jeff Choate, who had taken over as head coach of the Wolf Pack. He was one of three former Longhorns to follow Choate to Reno, alongside defensive tackle Kristopher Ross and defensive back Kitan Crawford.
Despite Red’s contributions on offense, Nevada struggled in 2024, finishing the season with a 3-10 overall record and a winless 0-7 mark in Mountain West Conference play. The year was capped off by a six-game losing streak, highlighting a tough season for the program.
Red was one of the few bright spots on the Wolf Pack offense, rushing for 687 yards and eight touchdowns on 119 carries. He also added 74 yards on 16 receptions. In Nevada’s Week 0 matchup against SMU—who later secured a spot in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff—Red scored a key third-quarter touchdown that gave Nevada an 11-point lead. However, SMU mounted a late comeback to win 29-24, shutting out the Wolf Pack in the fourth quarter.
Before his time at Nevada, Red spent two seasons at Texas, where he arrived in 2022 as a three-star wide receiver. He transitioned to running back and became known for his wildcat package role in 2023. One of his most iconic plays came in the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma, where he threw a 25-yard pass to tight end Gunnar Helm on a crucial fourth down.
With two years of eligibility remaining, Red now re-enters the portal in search of his next opportunity, looking to build on his versatile skill set and make an impact elsewhere.
