LeBron James Becomes First-Ever Ken Doll Athlete in Groundbreaking Barbie Milestone
LeBron James, a name synonymous with greatness on the basketball court, has once again broken barriers—this time in the toy industry. Mattel has officially unveiled a new Ken doll modeled after the Los Angeles Lakers superstar, marking the first time a professional male athlete has been honored in this way.
Krista Berger, Mattel’s senior vice president of Barbie, shared the inspiration behind the move. “We are excited to bring fans a new presentation of Ken,” she said. “LeBron serves as a role model whose impact transcends sports. He sets a positive example for the next generation.”
The LeBron Ken doll is designed with incredible attention to detail. Standing an inch taller than the average Ken—mirroring LeBron’s real-life height of 6-foot-9—the doll is decked out in a stylish pre-game outfit rather than a basketball uniform. The varsity jacket features LeBron’s initials “LJ,” along with an Ohio patch and a crown symbolizing his nickname, “King James.” His iconic number 23 appears on one sleeve, while the back of the jacket proudly displays “LeBron” and the heartfelt phrase, “Just a kid from Akron,” paying tribute to his roots.
Underneath the jacket, the doll wears a shirt printed with “We Are Family,” a nod to the values promoted by LeBron’s foundation. Accessories include a basketball, headphones, and sneakers, completing the look that captures his off-court swagger.
In a promotional video, LeBron was clearly thrilled when introduced to the doll. “Oh, he dope! That’s so cool,” he exclaimed, laughing as he playfully noted, “He might have to do a little lifting—legs are looking skinny.”
The release comes at a pivotal moment for Mattel, which is navigating financial challenges amid a tense trade war between the U.S. and China. Nevertheless, the company remains committed to pushing boundaries and embracing diversity. While Barbie has previously honored female athletes like Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, LeBron becomes the first male from the world of sports—and outside of entertainment—to join the prestigious Barbie lineup.
