Snooker Icons Jimmy White and Marco Fu Handed Lifeline with Tour Invites in Stunning Career Twist

Snooker legends Jimmy White and Marco Fu have been granted invitational tour cards to continue competing on the World Snooker Tour for the next two seasons, securing their spots through 2026 despite not qualifying for this year’s World Championship main draw in Sheffield.

Jimmy White, a six-time World Championship finalist and one of the sport’s most iconic figures, remains a fan favorite even at the age of 62. Known for his flair and passionate style of play, White won the 1984 Masters and the 1992 UK Championship but famously fell short in his pursuit of a World Championship title, finishing runner-up six times — including five consecutive years from 1990 to 1994. His continued love for the game and competitive spirit remain evident, with recent strong performances such as victories over Jackson Page and Hossein Vafaei at the Northern Ireland Open.

Meanwhile, 47-year-old Marco Fu from Hong Kong, another seasoned and respected professional, also retains his place on tour thanks to the invitation. A three-time ranking event winner, Fu has reached the semi-finals of the World Championship twice and has made final appearances at both the Masters and the UK Championship. Though currently ranked 70th in the world — narrowly missing out on a top 64 finish — Fu has shown he still has the talent to compete at the highest level.

Without the discretionary tour cards, both players would have dropped off the professional circuit after this season. World Snooker Tour chairman Steve Dawson and WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson praised both veterans, highlighting their immense contribution to the sport and enduring appeal to fans worldwide. Their presence, they noted, continues to inspire and add depth to the global snooker landscape.
