No Free Ride: Maguire Makes Ezra Mam Fight for Redemption in Broncos Return

Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire has made it clear: there will be no easy return for Ezra Mam. The young playmaker, who has completed a nine-game suspension following a drug-driving offence, must prove himself before reclaiming the No.6 jersey.

Breaking his silence ahead of the Broncos’ clash against South Sydney at Accor Stadium, Maguire explained his reasoning for not reinstating Mam immediately. Despite calls from some senior players supporting Mam’s return, the coach has insisted that performance and accountability remain the cornerstones of selection.

Mam, 22, has endured a challenging period, including facing the criminal justice system, receiving a $100,000 fine from the Broncos, and serving a nationwide ban from rugby league. He’s also attended rehabilitation, worked laboring jobs, and publicly expressed remorse for his actions.

Still, Maguire remains steadfast in his decision.
“We have standards at this club and Ezra knows what I expect,” he told Code Sports. “I sat down with Ezra and he totally understood my decision. He knows that you don’t just walk back into the team. Everyone else has had to fight for their spot, and now it’s his turn.”

Mam will begin his redemption path this weekend in the Hostplus Cup, suiting up for Souths Logan alongside former Bronco Anthony Milford as they face the Western Clydesdales at Davies Park.

While critics have questioned the length and intensity of Mam’s punishment, Broncos figures including Ben Dobbin and Kevin Walters have defended the young player. “He didn’t choose his punishment,” they said. “People are entitled to their views, but he’s paid a hefty price and it’s time to move forward.”
