“There were some whispers connecting Gary Payton II to the Lakers even before he signed with Bill Duffy,” insider Anthony Irwin posted on X. “I can safely say he’s very much on the Lakers’ radar.”
Payton, the son of Hall of Fame defender Gary Payton, has carved out a reputation of his own as one of the NBA’s premier perimeter defenders. He played a crucial role during the Warriors’ 2022 championship run, making a name for himself through hustle plays, defensive versatility, and an unrelenting motor. He can guard multiple positions, disrupt passing lanes, and bring toughness that the Lakers sorely need, especially after struggling to slow down elite wings in recent playoff exits.
From a roster and cap space perspective, Payton makes sense for Los Angeles. He’s unlikely to command a hefty contract, meaning the Lakers could add him without sacrificing flexibility or making drastic trades. His familiarity with Western Conference competition and playoff experience make him even more valuable for a team still trying to contend with LeBron James in the twilight of his career and Anthony Davis in his prime.
Whether or not Pelinka can close the deal remains to be seen. But if the Lakers are serious about upgrading their perimeter defense, Gary Payton II could be the perfect low-cost, high-impact solution.
