Darren Lockyer’s Shock Power Play: NRL Icon Set to Take Over London Broncos in Bold Super League Bid
NRL legend Darren Lockyer is on the verge of an unexpected venture into English rugby league, as he eyes a potential stake in the London Broncos. Alongside long-time business partner Grant Wechsel, Lockyer is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire a controlling interest in the Championship side, with plans to help guide the club back to the Super League in 2026.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Lockyer and Wechsel will travel to the UK this week to explore the opportunity further and attend the Broncos’ final game of the season against Bradford. If the deal goes through, they would assume a majority stake, while current owner Gary Hetherington—formerly the CEO of Leeds Rhinos—would remain a part-owner and board member.
Wechsel confirmed the duo’s interest, citing the untapped potential of the Super League and the strategic importance of London in growing the game.
“Darren and I have been in business since he retired in 2011 and we identified this as a good opportunity,” Wechsel told The Herald. “We think the Super League has a lot of potential. London is missing from the game. The Super League needs London. The international game needs London.”
The move is seen as both bold and strategic, especially with the NRL reportedly exploring greater international expansion. For Lockyer, a revered figure in rugby league, this could mark a new chapter—one that not only reconnects him with the sport at a strategic level but also positions him as a key figure in shaping its future abroad.
