The highly anticipated Scottish Open Snooker 2025 will soon be underway, bringing the world’s best snooker players back to the table. Held at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh, this prestigious tournament promises to deliver a week of exciting action, starting on Monday, December 15, and concluding on Sunday, December 21. Fans can expect thrilling matchups with some of the biggest names in the sport, including local hero John Higgins, as well as international stars like Kyren Wilson, Mark Selby, and last year’s surprise champion Lei Peifan.
The Stage is Set for a Star-Studded Tournament
The Scottish Open will see the world’s top 32 players competing in the final stages, beginning from Round 3 (Last 64). Among those vying for the £100,000 top prize are some familiar faces: Mark Selby, the English veteran and four-time World Champion; Kyren Wilson, ranked No. 2 in the world; and of course, the ever-popular John Higgins, who will be looking to add to his illustrious career with a home victory.
The 2024 champion, Lei Peifan of China, will return as one of the favorites after a memorable win last year, where he shocked the snooker world by defeating Wu Yize in a thrilling final. Peifan’s run to the title also saw him topple heavyweights like Mark Allen, cementing his status as one of the rising stars of the sport. However, he faces stiff competition this year from some of snooker’s best, including Mark Selby and Kyren Wilson.
Big Names Missing: O’Sullivan and Trump Out
However, there will be notable absences in this year’s tournament. Ronnie O’Sullivan, a six-time World Champion and one of the sport’s all-time greats, has withdrawn due to medical reasons, much to the disappointment of fans hoping to see him showcase his skill at the Meadowbank Sports Centre. Similarly, the world No. 1 Judd Trump has confirmed he will not be competing either, leaving a gap in the tournament that others will hope to fill.
Despite these withdrawals, the Scottish Open will still feature some of snooker’s most formidable talents, ensuring a fiercely competitive event. The tournament offers significant prize money, with the winner set to take home £100,000, while the runner-up will pocket £45,000. Those reaching the semi-finals will also earn £21,000, while the last 32 players will receive £5,400.
The action will kick off with morning sessions at 10am GMT, followed by afternoon sessions at 1pm GMT and evening sessions starting at 7pm GMT. For snooker fans, this is a can’t-miss event, with plenty of drama, skill, and high-octane action expected over the six-day tournament.
