Speculation has been swirling that NRL superstar Nathan Cleary could be considering a shock code switch to rugby union — possibly to be closer to his partner, Matildas star Mary Fowler, who plays in England. But some of rugby league’s biggest names are pouring cold water on the rumour.
Former Wallabies Tim Horan and Morgan Turinui helped reignite the talk last week, suggesting Cleary was “quite keen” on a move and that there was “interest on both sides.” Reports claimed a potential transfer to a European rugby club was on the table, sparking debate across both codes.
However, league legends including Andrew Johns, Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, and Brad Fittler have strongly rejected the idea. Speaking on the Sunday Footy Show, Johns dismissed it outright: “What’s today, June 1 — it’s not April 1. I’m saying a big fat no. That won’t happen.”
Slater echoed the sentiment, admitting it would be a huge coup for rugby union but said he’d be “surprised if Nathan challenged himself with that.” Smith and Fittler also cast serious doubt, suggesting Cleary’s loyalty to the Panthers and his stature in the NRL make the idea unlikely.
While the romance angle adds intrigue, those close to the game believe the timing and motivations don’t stack up. For now, Cleary looks firmly planted in rugby league — despite the occasional curveball the sporting world throws.
