From Classroom to Champion: Kyren Wilson Returns to Inspire Future Snooker Stars at His Old School
Kyren Wilson recently returned to Kettering Park Junior Academy, the school he attended until he was 11 years old, for the first time in over two decades. Now one of the world’s leading snooker players and a proud representative of Northamptonshire, Wilson’s visit was aimed at inspiring a new generation of young snooker enthusiasts.
Having grown up just a few miles from the school in Kettering, Wilson’s trip was both a nostalgic journey and an opportunity to give back to the community. He fondly recalled simple memories from his school days, like hanging his coat on the classroom pegs, before stepping into the very assembly hall where he spent many early school years. For Wilson, the visit was a reminder of how far he’s come—from a young student with a budding interest in snooker to the 2024 World Champion and Shanghai Masters winner.
During his time at the school, Wilson engaged with Year 6 pupils, answering their questions about the sport and his career. He then treated the group of 90 children to a hands-on demonstration, playing on a half-size Star Xingpai snooker table specially set up for the occasion. Following the demonstration, he shared practical advice and tips on potting balls, helping the young hopefuls improve their skills and encouraging their passion for the game.
Wilson expressed how meaningful it was to reconnect with his roots. “It’s really special to come back here,” he said. “I have so many memories of being a pupil at this school, and it’s humbling to think about the journey I’ve taken since those days. Snooker has given me an incredible life, and I want to do whatever I can to share that with the younger generation.”
He also spoke about the sport’s growing popularity worldwide and his hopes to see more young people drawn to snooker. For Wilson, this visit wasn’t just about reminiscing but about planting seeds for the future, inspiring children to discover and enjoy the fascinating game that has shaped his own life.
