Rising NRL star Selwyn Cobbo is set to join the Dolphins in 2026, leaving the Brisbane Broncos after a salary cap crunch forced the club to offer him a reduced deal. The Dolphins confirmed the high-profile signing on Friday morning, with CEO Terry Reader hailing it as a significant boost for the club’s future.
Cobbo’s departure from Brisbane follows the Broncos’ decision to prioritize contract extensions for key players Adam Reynolds and Kotoni Staggs. As a result, Cobbo was offered just $300,000 per season — a figure well below market value for a player of his calibre.
The 22-year-old, once a State of Origin and Kangaroos representative, saw his form dip in 2024 and was eventually dropped by the Broncos. Despite that, interest in the young winger remained strong, with North Queensland Cowboys coach Todd Payten confirming his side had also considered making a move.
“We’ve had a discussion, but it hasn’t gone far,” Payten said. “It depends on what he’s asking. We consider quality players, but the price has to be right.”
The Cowboys are on the hunt for a replacement for Valentine Holmes, who recently signed with the Dragons. Payten admitted that Cobbo could fill that void. “Selwyn Cobbo would help any club he goes to,” he added.
