Dylan Brown Sparks NRL Frenzy: Eels Star Explores Open Market as Rival Clubs Circle

Parramatta Eels have responded to speculation that star playmaker Dylan Brown may test the open market, with his manager reportedly reaching out to rival NRL and rugby union clubs.

Eels general manager of football, Mark O’Neill, addressed the situation, emphasizing the club’s desire for clarity. “It’s well publicized that Dylan has an option in his contract expiring in Round 10,” O’Neill said. “We wanted to be proactive and resolve this earlier, preferably before the season begins. Dylan is happy at the club; he’s been here since he was 16. We’ve invested a lot in his development and are confident he’ll remain and have a great season.”

Brown’s current contract includes options allowing him to remain with Parramatta until 2031. However, his manager, Chris Orr, has signaled that the playmaker is not yet ready to commit long-term. Brown has until Round 10 to activate his player option for the 2026 season but appears keen to explore other opportunities first.

According to reports from Code Sports and The Sydney Morning Herald, Orr sent an email to NRL and rugby union clubs gauging interest in Brown. The email described Brown as a rare “franchise player” and invited clubs to express interest in his services for 2026 and beyond.

Brown, who reportedly earns $900,000 annually, isn’t the only high-profile Eel with player options. Blues halfback Mitchell Moses has similar clauses for 2027 and 2028, while star center Will Penisini also holds contract options.

If Brown were to depart, it would be another blow for the Eels, who have experienced the downside of player options in the past. Last year, junior talent Blaize Talagi opted out of his deal and joined the Penrith Panthers, leaving Parramatta reeling. The situation highlights the challenges the club faces in retaining its top talent amidst a competitive market.
