Fiji 7s Crush New Zealand 36-5 in Sevens Masterclass to Storm Into Singapore Semifinals
The Fiji Airways Men’s 7s team delivered a dominant performance to secure a place in the Singapore 7s semifinals, thrashing arch-rivals New Zealand 36-5 in their final pool match. It was a statement victory, one that showcased Fiji’s trademark flair, speed, and tactical brilliance in sevens rugby.
Captain Sevuloni Mocenacagi set the tone early, slicing through the defense to score in just the second minute. Though New Zealand responded quickly with a try from Cody Vai, cutting the deficit to 7-5, Fiji kept their composure. Mocenacagi once again played a crucial role, setting up Joseva Talecolo for Fiji’s second try, stretching the lead to 12-5. From there, the Fijians took control of the match. Joji Nasova showed his strength and pace, adding Fiji’s third try just before halftime to make it 17-5.
The second half was all about Fiji’s relentless attack and rock-solid defense. Nasova bagged his second try, and was soon followed by scores from Filipe Sauturaga and Rauto Vakadranu. New Zealand, despite their experience and effort, couldn’t break through Fiji’s tight defense again.
With the emphatic win, Fiji now prepares to face Argentina in the second semifinal at 6:56pm. The first semifinal features Kenya and Spain at 6:34pm, while New Zealand will meet Great Britain in the 5th Place Playoff. The Cup Final is scheduled for 11:41pm.
