Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is looking to use the upcoming 2025 Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) as a springboard to build depth and uncover future stars for the national side. With a balanced squad comprising seasoned internationals and promising newcomers, Byrne believes the tournament presents the perfect opportunity to test combinations and develop cohesion.
“We’ve been able to put a good mix of players together for this PNC,” Byrne said. “Spending our first two weeks of the campaign on home soil in Fiji gives us a great opportunity to prepare our team and be around our fans.”
The squad will begin their preparations with a fortnight of intensive training in Fiji, which Byrne sees as not just a time for technical and tactical development, but also a chance for players to engage with local supporters. This home-based start, he believes, will help build team chemistry and establish a strong foundation ahead of their opening match.
Importantly, Byrne views the tournament as a critical testing ground for emerging talent. With long-term squad planning in mind, he says the PNC offers younger players a valuable opportunity to prove themselves and stake a claim for future national selection.
The Flying Fijians will kick off their Pacific Nations Cup campaign on August 30, facing off against Tonga at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. With high expectations and a renewed focus on squad building, Fiji will be aiming not only for tournament success but for long-term growth.
