From NBA Star to Poker Kingpin: Gilbert Arenas Arrested in Shocking Illegal Gambling Bust
Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas has been arrested and charged in connection with an illegal high-stakes gambling operation allegedly run out of a luxury mansion he owns in Encino, California. Federal prosecutors announced Wednesday that the 43-year-old ex-Washington Wizards guard is facing multiple charges, including conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, operating an illegal gambling business, and making false statements to federal authorities.
According to the Department of Justice, Arenas was more than just a property owner—he is accused of actively facilitating the illegal poker games that took place at the so-called “Gable House.” Federal documents allege that Arenas knowingly rented out the mansion for the purpose of hosting illicit poker games, and that he provided gambling equipment used during at least one specific event on July 19, 2022. Furthermore, he is said to have collected rent payments from the individuals operating the games, thereby profiting from the illegal activity.
Arenas initially denied any involvement when questioned by federal agents, claiming ignorance of the gambling that was taking place on the premises. However, the indictment directly contradicts those statements, asserting that he had full knowledge of, and participated in, the events.
The case is part of a broader investigation into a criminal gambling ring that has also been linked to an alleged Israeli crime figure. One of the co-defendants in the case is facing additional charges related to international money laundering.
The arrest marks a dramatic fall from grace for Arenas, who once lit up NBA courts but now finds himself entangled in a high-stakes legal battle that could carry serious consequences.
