Luka Dončić’s night came to an abrupt and controversial end during Tuesday’s matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The star guard was ejected midway through the fourth quarter after draining a tough shot and exchanging words with a Thunder fan seated courtside. The incident took place with the Lakers clinging to a slim 108–107 lead, but things quickly spiraled following Dončić’s dismissal, and the team ultimately fell 136–120.

Referee J.T. Orr issued Dončić his second technical foul after witnessing the exchange, which appeared to be sparked by a comment from the fan. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin caught up with the fan in question, Jeremy Price, after the game to get a clearer picture of what transpired. “During the game within the game, I mentioned that he was short and he missed it,” Price recalled. “He turned around and he shot an expletive back and J.T. [Orr] happened to see it. At that point, he T’d him up.” Price even acknowledged the confusion might’ve led to the technical: “That could possibly be. And that’s probably why he picked up that technical, to be quite honest.”

Dončić ended his night with 23 points, five assists, and three rebounds in 31 minutes. His exit shifted the momentum decisively in Oklahoma City’s favor, and the Lakers couldn’t recover without their floor general.
