Broncos Lose Rising Star Coby Black to Raiders in Shock Mid-Contract Move
Michael Maguire, head coach of the Brisbane Broncos, has expressed his understanding of young star Coby Black’s decision to leave the club ahead of his final contract year. Black, who had already agreed to a 2027 move to the Canberra Raiders, sought an immediate release to join the Raiders for the upcoming season, a request granted on Tuesday. The 19-year-old halfback had been viewed as a key player for Brisbane’s future, with many speculating he could eventually succeed Adam Reynolds as the Broncos’ long-term No.7.
Despite the Broncos’ efforts to retain Black, including the excitement surrounding his development, the signing of Jonah Pezet on a three-year deal from 2027 and the acquisition of Tom Duffy from the Cowboys complicated Black’s prospects. With Reynolds and Herbie Farnworth firmly entrenched in the halves, Black’s chances for first-grade action in Brisbane appeared limited, leading him to seek a fresh opportunity with the Raiders.
Canberra, eager to bolster their halves options, quickly secured Black on a three-year deal, allowing him to compete for a starting role alongside young gun Ethan Sanders, who will be given the first chance at the No.7 jersey in 2026. With experienced playmaker Jamal Fogarty leaving for Manly, Black is now set to challenge Sanders for a spot in the Raiders’ first-grade team next season.
Maguire, who praised Black’s attitude and development during his time at Brisbane, acknowledged the move as a significant opportunity for the young player. “We would have loved to have Coby here at the Broncos for 2026, but we fully respect the opportunity he’s been given,” said Maguire. “He’s been a pleasure to coach, and we hope our paths cross again in the future.”
