Sunderland Strike Deal for Ex-Premier League Star Bertrand Traoré
Sunderland AFC is thrilled to confirm the signing of experienced forward Bertrand Traoré, who joins the Black Cats from Dutch giants Ajax. Traoré arrives on Wearside alongside fellow new recruit Brian Brobbey, penning a one-year deal with an option for a further year.
The 29-year-old brings proven pedigree and attacking flair to the Stadium of Light, having enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Eredivisie and UEFA Europa League last season. At Ajax, Traoré netted 10 goals and provided 8 assists, showcasing his creativity and eye for goal on both domestic and European stages.
A seasoned international, Traoré has earned 78 caps for Burkina Faso, scoring 20 goals for his country. His leadership and experience at the international level will add further steel to Sunderland’s forward line.
Traoré’s footballing journey began at Chelsea, where he broke into the Premier League and gained valuable experience. He later shone at clubs across Europe including SBV Vitesse, Olympique Lyonnais, İstanbul Başakşehir, and Villarreal CF. His most notable spell in England came with Aston Villa, where he made 62 appearances between 2020 and 2024, contributing to key moments during his tenure.
With a career total of 97 goals and 46 assists, Traoré brings a wealth of attacking experience to Sunderland’s promotion-chasing squad. His versatility across the front line, technical skill, and European pedigree make him a significant addition as the club looks to push forward this season.
Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman praised the move, stating: “Bertrand is a player of real quality and experience. We believe he’ll make a strong impact on and off the pitch.”
Traoré is expected to link up with his new teammates immediately and could feature in the squad’s upcoming fixtures.
