James Tedesco Swaps Footy Fame for Fur and Finds Purpose in Greyhound Adoption Drive

Rugby league superstar James Tedesco is stepping into a new team — but it’s not on the footy field. The Sydney Roosters captain and premiership-winning fullback has officially partnered with Greyhounds as Pets NSW (GAP), joining forces with fellow NRL fullback and ambassador Ryan Papenhuyzen to promote greyhound adoption.

The pair will make a special appearance at the upcoming National Greyhound Adoption Day, set to take place on Sunday, 27 April, at the Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park. The event aims to find loving homes for 60 retired racing greyhounds under this year’s heartfelt theme: Adopt Happiness.

For Tedesco, the decision to support GAP was deeply personal. “Whenever the opportunity comes along to be involved with a product or cause, it must be something I strongly believe in,” he said. “That’s why I had no hesitation partnering with Greyhounds as Pets as an ambassador.”

Despite their reputation as elite racers, Tedesco wants the public to know that greyhounds make ideal pets. “They’re gentle, affectionate, and playful. A few of my mates have adopted greyhounds, and they’re awesome dogs,” he shared. “People assume they need a lot of exercise, but the truth is they’re pretty laid-back and enjoy lounging around.”

Steve Griffin, CEO of Greyhound Racing NSW, praised Tedesco’s involvement, saying, “James is an icon of the sport and a respected leader. We’re thrilled to have him help shine a spotlight on these amazing animals and the joy they can bring to families.”

With both Tedesco and Papenhuyzen lending their star power to this cause, the hope is to inspire more Aussies to consider greyhound adoption. As Tedesco put it, “When you adopt a greyhound, you’re bringing happiness into your home. I’m proud to support GAP and help people see just how great these dogs really are.”
