Warriors Make Bold Move: Dennis Schröder Joins Golden State in Trade for Injured De’Anthony Melton

The Golden State Warriors have agreed to a trade with the Brooklyn Nets, acquiring point guard Dennis Schröder in exchange for De’Anthony Melton, sources confirmed to ESPN on Saturday. As part of the deal, the Warriors will also send three second-round picks to Brooklyn while receiving one in return.

Schröder has been one of the standout guards in the NBA this season, playing a pivotal role in keeping the Nets in the playoff race in the Eastern Conference. After being traded from the Toronto Raptors to Brooklyn last year, Schröder has excelled in his first full season with the Nets, averaging 18.4 points and a career-high 6.6 assists per game in 33.6 minutes of play.

His improvements as an outside shooter, particularly his career-best 39% shooting on 6.5 three-point attempts per game, have further solidified his value to Brooklyn. Despite his strong performance, the Nets have struggled recently, entering the weekend in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, four losses behind the sixth seed.

For Golden State, this trade addresses several key needs. With Melton sidelined for the rest of the season due to a torn ACL, the Warriors have faced difficulties in maintaining their early-season momentum. After a strong start, Golden State has dropped seven of their past nine games, and the absence of Melton, who was seen as an ideal fit alongside Stephen Curry due to his ball-handling, defense, and shooting abilities, has left the team in search of balance.

Schröder is expected to bring immediate relief to Golden State’s backcourt, providing an additional point guard who can handle the ball, organize the second unit, and contribute as an outside shooter. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr had expressed frustration over the loss of Melton, noting that it had disrupted his rotation and left the team in flux. Kerr had relied on Melton’s two-way abilities, particularly his role as a secondary ball handler and defender alongside Curry.

The 31-year-old Schröder is currently on an expiring contract worth $13 million, adding a sense of urgency to his potential impact in the short term.
