Joel Embiid’s career has reached a crossroads. The former MVP’s reputation is under fire after there have been reports of consistent tardiness and a lack of professionalism. Supposedly the organization has seen this for awhile. Tyrese Maxey has called him out and is trying to hold him accountable. This is just one slice of the pie, Embiid has a long injury history and has played only four games this year.

Four games out of a possible 20. Not great numbers from a guy Philadelphia needs on the floor. With all of these issues coming to a head, it’s the perfect time for a fresh start for both parties. The Miami Heat would be a perfect trade partner for the Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid.

Why would Philadelphia trade Joel Embiid?

Well, quite simply he’s not available. He misses games at a higher clip than any other superstar in the league. Embiid has never once played 70 games in his NBA career. Even when he is available, which has only been four times out of 20 so far this year, he hasn’t been good. He’s averaging only 19 points per game. This is down a shocking 15 points from a season ago. The Sixers season is already over and it’s because Embiid never plays.

The character flaws and lack of professionalism are just recently coming out. Someone spilled the beans on the Sixers players only meeting where this was discussed. That’s never good to hear but regardless, Embiid needs to take accountability. He’s the best player on this team and he needs to be a leader. No wonder the Sixers never get out of the second round. Their best player isn’t showing up early and staying late. That’s what it takes to be a champion and Joel Embiid is missing it.

Embiid to Miami?

Miami makes a lot of sense for Embiid. He loved playing with Jimmy Butler during Butler’s short time in Philay. This reunion could prove a powerful one and keep Butler in place too as his contract is expiring. Embiid would also be the missing piece for a Miami offense that struggles to score in the half-court. Bam Adebayo could easily transition to the four spot and Embiid could slot right in at the five. After an abysmal start for Miami, they’ve gotten back to .500 and sit at 10-10. Miami holds the seventh seed currently in the Eastern Conference.

Tyler Herro has been a massive bright spot for Miami this season, averaging an all-time high 24.1 ppg. He’s also shot the ball extremely well. With as much guard play as Philly already has I don’t think they’d have too much interest in Herro in a trade package.

For Philadelphia, this move makes sense because it allows them a clean break. You can hand the keys over long-term to Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain. They would no longer have to deal with Embiid’s headaches and lack of availability. Their young players have huge upsides and they can give them more opportunities right away. I could see Philadelphia being interested in Jaime Jaquez Jr, Nikola Jovic, and rookie Kel’el Ware.

These are all young pieces that Philly could look to develop. Add in two or three first round picks and I think the deal could be done. Both teams benefit as Miami gets a new star and Philly gets a fresh start with young talent. Maybe we’ll see Joel Embiid in South Beach soon!
