Dragons’ loophole bid to sign Tigers star; Kevvie’s verdict on Reynolds deal: Transfer Whispers
The Dragons have reportedly approached the NRL to exploit a loophole that would allow them to sign Tigers prop David Klemmer, while Francis Molo remains on the books.
The Daily Telegraph reported St George Illawarra have reached out to the NRL to figure out how they can accommodate Klemmer in their salary cap, while the negotiate a mutual release for Molo.
The Dragons have been in dispute with Molo for more than a month with the prop wanting a release after an incident involving a staff member.
The club recently granted the former Maroons forward permission to explore his options on the open market, but included a number of caveats.
The Dragons have asked the NRL if they can sign Klemmer on a deal which would allow him to play for them while they sort out Molo’s departure.
That would mean the Dragons start the season with 31 players, unless they can strike a deal to release Molo in the next week.
The NRL are empathetic to the Dragons’ position but are wary of creating a precedent that could come back to bite them in the future.
Klemmer remains on the Tigers’ books for now, but has been given permission to join the Dragons if a deal can be struck with the NRL to register his contract.

Kevin Walters has backed Adam Reynolds to play on in 2026 after reports the Broncos captain is keen to extend his stay at Red Hill into a fifth season.
The Courier Mail reported Reynolds is eyeing a contract extension to play into a 15th season, when the halfback turns 36 years of age.
Speaking on Sky Sports Radio, former Broncos coach Kevvie Walters was asked if he believes Reynolds can play on, beyond his current deal, which expires in November.
“That’s fine, he’s a good little player Reyno,” Walters said.
“As long as he can stay healthy I’m sure that won’t be a problem, but I guess what may be a problem is the salary cap and how they fit in all these guys under their cap.
“He’s certainly been a great buy for the Broncos and that was the reason we bought him for his experience and the way he can manage a game. His kicking game and his passing game and his defence is good, so if he is fit he is one of the better players in the competition.
“If he can stay healthy I would have no questions about taking him on again for 2026.”
Reynolds was signed to the Broncos on a three-year deal worth $800,000 a season, but took a pay cut to sign a one-year extension worth around $500,000 to play on in 2025.
The Broncos also need to re-sign Kotoni Staggs and Selwyn Cobbo and have star prop Payne Haas coming off-contract in 2026 on a deal worth $1 million plus a season.
The Broncos also have 13 players in their top 30 coming off-contract this season, so they will likely have to let some go to keep Reynolds for another season.
Reynolds has scored 50 tries and 2,344 points in 287 games for the Rabbitohs and Broncos since his debut in 2012, winning one premiership from three Grand Finals and playing two games for the Blues.
Broncos prodigy Blake Mozer has shut down reports linking him to talks with an NRL rival as he maintained his desire to stay at Red Hill long-term.
Speaking with The Sydney Morning Herald, the injured Mozer is focusing on getting back on the field before deciding his future.
“I haven’t spoken to any other clubs, there was a bit of a report saying I had when I actually haven’t,” Mozer told The Sydney Morning Herald.
“It’s not the right time for me, with my injury I’m just taking it one thing at a time, and for me to get back to footy I’ve really got to lock in with my rehab and get that under control so I can be at the best of my capabilities.
“There seems to be a spot for me if I’m willing to work for it and that’s what I want to do – just keep working hard and work my way back into the team again after the shoulder injury.
“I’d love to stay here at the Broncos, whether that happens or not is not up to me – it’s up to my management, it’s up to the Broncos.
“I just want to keep playing good footy with the Broncos for as long as I can.”

“I’d love to keep him,” Maguire added via The Courier-Mail.
“Blake is great to coach. He is diligent about wanting to learn the game, that’s something there that your hookers have to have.
“They are the guys that are driving a lot of what goes on and they are the guys that everyone is running at.
“On both sides of the ball, you have to be high end because you are steering the ship, you are touching the ball first and you have to put your body on the line.
“Moey has been doing that throughout the pre-season, he will be back this year and we’ll get his shoulder to where it has to be.”
The 20-year-old has scored one try in nine games for the Broncos since his debut in 2023.
