Ezra Mam’s Career in Jeopardy: Legal Battle Looms After Drug-Fueled Car Crash

Brisbane Broncos star Ezra Mam is preparing for potential legal action following his involvement in a serious car crash last October. Mam, who was driving under the influence of cocaine and without a valid license, collided head-on with an Uber-registered vehicle, injuring the driver, a female passenger, and her young daughter.

The 22-year-old playmaker was fined $850 and had his license suspended for six months. Additionally, the NRL handed him a suspension until Round 10 and imposed a $120,000 fine, jointly enforced by the league and the Broncos. Despite concerns that his multi-million-dollar contract could be terminated, Mam has been given a second chance and is determined to make the most of it.

Uber driver Marcel Van Den Camp has now launched legal proceedings against Mam’s third-party insurer, seeking compensation for injuries and income loss after being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, Mam could face further legal troubles if it is proven that his cocaine use directly caused the accident, potentially leading his insurer to pursue legal action against him.

“When all that stuff happens … we will deal with it when it comes around,” Mam said regarding the possible lawsuit. “Until then, I am going to work on being the best version of myself for myself and the club.”

Mam admitted that he feared losing his career but remains grateful to the Broncos for their support. “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t worried,” he said. “I’m just grateful I get the opportunity to keep going for the Brisbane Broncos. No doubt, I want to repay the club for giving me a second chance.”

Before his court appearance, Mam was criticized for not reaching out to the victims. However, he explained that legal restrictions prevented him from doing so. “Leading up to the court case, I wasn’t able to contact them, which was on my mind throughout the whole process,” he said. “Once the case was settled, I reached out that same day. I also wanted to apologize in person.”

Mam has since attempted to meet with the victims but is respecting their space until they are ready. “I don’t want to cramp their space or be too pushy. I just want to respect their boundaries, and when the time is right, we will go from there,” he added.

Following the incident, Mam entered a rehabilitation facility and has since committed himself to personal growth. Now back in training with the Broncos, he is also working once a week as a carpenter.

“There were a lot of emotions going through my head,” he reflected. “I had to keep quiet about it and wasn’t able to express myself or how sorry I was. I’ve done a lot of work on myself, and that is one thing I am proud of.”

Determined to move forward, Mam is focused on regaining the respect of his peers and becoming a positive role model. “The only way I can gain respect is through my actions on and off the field,” he said. “I am truly sorry and regret what I did. Every day, I remind myself that I was in the wrong, but now, I’m looking forward to getting on the right path.”
