With Florida State University previously considering private equity options, the hiring of a new Chief Financial Officer could signal a move closer to that goal.

TALLAHASSEE – Florida State University’s Vice President and Director of Athletics, Michael Alford, announced on Monday the hiring of Josh Turner from Georgia Southern University as the new Deputy Athletics Director and Chief Financial Officer for Seminole Athletics. Turner, who began his role at FSU today, will oversee the finances of FSU Athletics with a focus on revenue generation to ensure long-term financial sustainability, as well as lead the department’s efforts to manage upcoming spending caps.
“I am excited to welcome Josh Turner to our executive team to drive our financial strategy,” said Alford. “Josh’s extensive experience as a CFO at multiple institutions, along with his strategic vision, makes him a great fit for our department. He will play an essential role in advancing our revenue generation efforts.”
Turner expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, saying, “My family and I are excited to join Florida State University during such a pivotal time in college athletics. I look forward to working with Michael Alford and his leadership team to serve our student-athletes, coaches, staff, and the broader FSU community. The vision for excellence here is inspiring, and I am eager to contribute to the success of this storied program.”
Turner joins FSU after serving as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Business Operations at Georgia Southern, his second tenure with the school. In this role, he managed the department’s budgets, developed innovative revenue strategies, and created a five-year plan to maintain balanced budgets and build reserves. He was also instrumental in the creation of Georgia Southern’s new baseball facility, ensuring its financial sustainability.
Additionally, Turner introduced a cap management model that helped coaches better project rosters and allocate scholarships strategically. He also oversaw human resources and was the administrative supervisor for volleyball, baseball, and women’s golf.
Before returning to Georgia Southern, Turner spent two years as the Assistant Athletics Director for Business Operations at the University of Miami, overseeing the athletics business office and managing operating and capital budgets. He was also the main liaison for the football budget and handled financial reporting, serving as a point of contact for executive and university personnel.
Turner’s career in athletics administration began at Georgia Southern in 2020 as a budget analyst. Prior to that, he worked with E15 Group (consulting for the Tampa Bay Rays) and IMG Academy.
A Salem, Virginia native, Turner earned his bachelor’s degree from Southeastern University in Lakeland, where he was a baseball student-athlete. He and his wife, Bailey, a former volleyball player, are the parents of a daughter, Olivia.
