Flying Fijians Set for Ultimate Test: 25 Battles to Forge a World Cup Contender

The Fiji Water Flying Fijians are gearing up for a rigorous build-up to the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, with head coach Mick Byrne confirming that the team is expected to play between 20 and 25 Test matches before the tournament. Byrne believes this schedule provides ample opportunities to refine his squad, test different combinations, and ensure the team is well-prepared for rugby’s biggest stage.

With the introduction of World Rugby’s Nations Championship next year, Fiji will gain more exposure to top-tier teams, something they have lacked in previous years. Byrne sees this as a major advantage, as it allows his players to gain experience at the highest level while also strengthening team cohesion.

“We’re looking at somewhere between 20 and 25 Tests before the World Cup. That gives us a full season of matches spread over three years, which is a great opportunity for planning, development, and refining our game,” Byrne said.

The Flying Fijians will kick off their Test schedule in July with a clash against the Wallabies before facing Scotland in August. Preparations are already underway, with the coaching staff maintaining communication with squad members to ensure they are ready for the upcoming challenges.
