From Cricket Stardom to NRL Breakout: Ryley Smith’s Stunning Rise with the Eels

Parramatta Eels’ rising star Ryley Smith has opened up about his remarkable journey in rugby league, a path that almost saw him pursue a career in cricket instead. The talented hooker has quickly become a key part of the Eels’ roster under new head coach Jason Ryles, earning his spot after consistent performances and a standout 80-minute display against the Wests Tigers. With his trademark blue headgear and work ethic, Smith has overtaken more experienced players like Brendan Hands and Joey Lussick to secure the starting dummy-half role.

Despite his rapid rise, Smith admits the journey has been surreal. “I didn’t think I’d get this opportunity so early,” he told Zero Tackle. “But I’m learning every day, just taking it as it comes. Running out alongside players like Dylan Brown and Mitchell Moses still puts me in awe — I remind them that I’m allowed to be a fan too.”

Smith’s humility is matched by his dedication to improving his game. He acknowledges there’s still a long way to go in mastering his craft as a hooker, regularly studying other top players in the position and leaning on the experience of senior teammates for guidance.

Interestingly, Smith’s sporting career almost took a different turn. While in school, he was selected for the prestigious Australian Schoolboys cricket team — an honor few have achieved in both rugby league and cricket since Bronko Djura in 1980. Playing alongside names like Sam Konstas, Cooper Connolly, and Jake Fraser-McGurk, Smith had the chance to follow a cricketing path but ultimately chose rugby league. “It was a long decision, but I felt footy was best for me,” he said. “I still love cricket and enjoy watching it, and I stay in touch with the boys — they’ve all been great and supportive.”

Now firmly part of the Eels’ future, Smith’s decision looks to be paying off as he lives out a childhood dream on the NRL stage.
