Lewis Hamilton could be facing a grid penalty at the Singapore Grand Prix after being placed under investigation for a potential red flag infringement during the final practice session. The incident in question occurred after Liam Lawson crashed his Racing Bulls car, which prompted red flags to be waved just 15 minutes into the session.
Hamilton was observed slowing down at the site of Lawson’s crash, adhering to the initial requirement under red flag conditions. However, after passing the incident zone, he appeared to increase his speed as he made his way back to the pit lane — a move that has caught the attention of race stewards.
While the incident did not appear to be dangerous, the fact that it took place under red flag conditions could be enough for the stewards to take action. This is particularly concerning for Hamilton given the precedent set earlier in the season. Haas driver Oliver Bearman received grid penalties on two occasions this year for red flag-related incidents during practice sessions. At the Monaco Grand Prix, Bearman was handed a 10-place grid drop for overtaking under red flags, and at Silverstone, he was penalized again for crashing in the pit lane after entering too quickly during a red flag period.
In Hamilton’s case, the stewards are likely focusing on his speed as he entered the pit lane — an area of the track where caution is paramount, especially under red flags. While some argue his actions weren’t overtly reckless, the increase in speed may be deemed excessive relative to other cars on the circuit.
If penalized, Hamilton could find his starting position for the race significantly impacted, which would be a major setback in his ongoing battle for strong finishes this season.
