Eels Exile: Ryan Matterson Set for Shock Exit as Super League Beckons
Veteran forward Ryan Matterson appears to be nearing the end of his time at the Parramatta Eels, with the club reportedly granting him permission to negotiate with rival teams. The 30-year-old has struggled to break into Jason Ryles’ NRL squad in 2025, making just one appearance so far this season and spending most of his time playing in the NSW Cup.
Matterson’s management team, led by the Orr brothers, recently sought approval from the club to explore opportunities elsewhere — a request that Parramatta has now approved, according to The Daily Telegraph. Notably, his agents have been spotted in England, watching Super League games, fueling speculation that a move to the UK competition could be on the cards.
Having joined the Eels in 2020 from the Wests Tigers, Matterson has been a key contributor for much of his time at the club, racking up 94 appearances. Despite exercising his player option to remain with Parramatta in 2026, the current circumstances suggest that Matterson may be heading for a fresh start — potentially overseas.
He’s not alone in facing limited NRL opportunities under new coach Ryles. Fellow forwards Bryce Cartwright has yet to play an NRL game this year, while Joe Ofahengaue was released and has since joined Super League outfit Leigh. Additionally, Shaun Lane remains on indefinite leave from the game as he contemplates his future.
Just months ago, Matterson expressed excitement about the 2025 season, reflecting fondly on his career with the Eels. But now, the experienced forward’s journey with the club may be drawing to a close as he looks ahead to new challenges.
