Lakers Stun NBA with Marcus Smart Signing — But the Fallout Is Just Beginning
The Los Angeles Lakers have made their first significant splash of the offseason by bringing in Marcus Smart, a move that has immediately energized the fanbase. According to Shams Charania, Smart has agreed to a two-year, $11 million deal after clearing waivers. Known for his elite perimeter defense and playoff experience, Smart adds grit and leadership to a roster that’s been missing both. However, his addition also comes with a challenge — the Lakers need to make financial room for his deal to become viable.
As things currently stand, Los Angeles does not yet have the salary cap flexibility to fully absorb Smart’s contract. That means roster moves are inevitable. Shake Milton, who had already been rumored to be on the chopping block, now appears to be the most obvious candidate to be moved. The recent re-signing of center Jaxson Hayes only added to the writing on the wall for Milton, who hasn’t carved out a reliable role in the Lakers’ rotation.
The Lakers could also look internally for help. The NBA Summer League gave front office executives a chance to evaluate some promising young players who could be added on minimum contracts. Unfortunately, a potential diamond in the rough, Darius Bazley, suffered a devastating injury, likely ruling him out of the mix. His loss is both a blow to Bazley personally and to a Lakers team still searching for cost-effective depth.
With Smart now onboard, the Lakers’ next move seems obvious: clear roster space and salary to finalize the deal, then target one more low-cost free agent — preferably a backup big — to balance the roster. Rob Pelinka has made one bold move. To truly turn this roster into a title contender for 2025-26, he can’t stop now.
