Mavs in Crisis: Injury-Ridden Dallas Sends Anthony Davis to G League as Playoff Hopes Hang in the Balance
The Dallas Mavericks have assigned 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis to their G League affiliate, the Texas Legends, as he works toward returning from a strained left adductor. This move allows Davis to participate in 5-on-5 scrimmages and practice with the team while ramping up his conditioning.
Davis, the centerpiece of the blockbuster Luka Dončić trade, has been sidelined since February 8. In his lone appearance for the Mavericks, he delivered an impressive stat line of 26 points, 16 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 blocks in 31 minutes before exiting due to injury. There have been internal discussions about shutting him down for the season, but Davis remains determined to get back on the court.
Jaden Hardy, who has missed the last seven games with a sprained ankle, has also been sent to the Legends to aid in his recovery process.
The Mavericks are dealing with a severe injury crisis, often struggling to field even the league-minimum eight active players. During Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, the roster was notably depleted. Two-way players Kessler Edwards and Brandon Williams have been crucial in recent weeks, but both are nearing their season limit for NBA appearances, adding to the team’s challenges.
While Dallas has an open roster spot and could apply for a hardship exception, they are hard-capped at the first salary cap apron. This financial constraint leaves them unable to afford even a 10-day contract, complicating efforts to reinforce the roster as they fight for playoff positioning.
