While the deal brings some intriguing upside—Barrett averaged 21.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.4 assists this season—it’s hard to imagine Dallas giving up on Lively, who was instrumental in their 2024 NBA Finals run. His rim protection and defensive instincts gave the Mavericks a real anchor, something championship teams build around. Barrett, meanwhile, still struggles with efficiency, shooting just 35% from three and a concerning 63% from the line.
Agbaji offers floor-spacing with a near 40% three-point clip, and Shead is a tenacious on-ball defender, but none offer the game-changing potential Lively possesses. Furthermore, trading Klay Thompson—who chose Dallas in free agency—to a rebuilding team like Toronto would be poor optics and a betrayal of trust. Dwight Powell also brings immense locker room value, even if his on-court impact has waned.
