Mercedes Shuts Down Shock INEOS Buyout Rumors Amid Financial Turmoil
Mercedes has denied recent reports suggesting they are considering buying out INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s one-third stake in their Formula 1 team. The speculation, originally reported by The Telegraph, claimed that INEOS’ involvement in the team could be scaled back due to financial concerns, but Mercedes insists their partnership remains stable.
A spokesperson for Mercedes told Sky Sports News, “There is no truth in the story. There have been no discussions at any point of a shareholder change, and sponsorship with INEOS is ongoing and stable.”
Despite this, there are signs of financial turbulence for INEOS, with reports indicating potential cutbacks across their sporting investments. The company is currently facing legal action from New Zealand Rugby after allegedly failing to pay the first installment of their 2025 sponsorship fee. Additionally, INEOS’ withdrawal from Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup team has led to another legal dispute.
Beyond motorsport and sailing, INEOS is also facing challenges within football. At Manchester United, where Ratcliffe holds a minority stake, financial pressures have led to staff redundancies and increased ticket prices, creating unrest among fans. Meanwhile, credit rating agencies have raised concerns over INEOS’ financial health, noting that the company’s debts are estimated to be five to six times their annual earnings.
Although INEOS’ branding may become less visible on Mercedes cars from 2025, the F1 team maintains that their partnership remains intact. For now, Mercedes and INEOS continue their collaboration, despite the financial pressures facing Ratcliffe’s wider business empire.
