Michigan Eyes Top Transfer Talent as Frontcourt Overhaul Begins
Michigan basketball is preparing for a major frontcourt overhaul as head coach Dusty May braces for the departure of his two primary big men. With Vlad Goldin out of eligibility and Danny Wolf expected to declare for the NBA after just one season in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines are actively exploring their options in the transfer portal.
As the portal officially opens on Monday, Michigan has already been linked to several big men. One of the first names to emerge is San Diego State’s 7-footer, Magoon Gwath. However, he is not the only target on their radar. According to On3’s Joe Tipton, Michigan has also made contact with Rutgers transfer center Lathan Sommerville.
Sommerville, a 6-foot-10 freshman, recently completed his first collegiate season with the Scarlet Knights, where he played a key role in their rotation. Starting 15 of Rutgers’ 32 games, he averaged 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds while logging 20.9 minutes per contest. Despite entering the transfer portal, Sommerville reportedly did so with a “do not contact” tag, a common indicator that he already has a strong idea of his next destination.
While Michigan is among the schools expressing interest, they face competition from programs like Ohio State, Tennessee, USC, and Texas A&M, among others. Given his size, skillset, and ability to stretch the floor, Sommerville could be an excellent fit for Dusty May’s system. With the Wolverines needing to replenish their frontcourt depth, securing a versatile big like Sommerville could be crucial as they navigate a pivotal offseason.
