Fiji Airways Fiji 7s captain Jerry Matana has set a clear objective for the team—bringing the Hong Kong Sevens title back to Fiji. As the most successful team in the tournament’s history, with 19 titles to their name, Fiji’s dominance in Hong Kong is well-documented. However, their last triumph came in 2019, and Matana and his teammates are eager to end the drought.

With the Hong Kong Sevens fast approaching, the squad has intensified its preparations, focusing on key areas that need improvement. One major emphasis is maintaining composure and discipline under fatigue, a weakness that has cost them in recent tournaments.

Matana acknowledged the disappointment of their recent performance in Vancouver but emphasized that dwelling on past defeats won’t help. Instead, the team has used the loss as motivation to improve. “Our goal for every tournament remains the same—we go in to win. Hong Kong is special, and we haven’t lifted that trophy in a while, so we are determined to bring it back. After Vancouver, we were upset, but the coach reminded us to accept the loss, go home, work on our weaknesses, and return stronger for Hong Kong,” he shared.
