The Fiji Rakavi Football Union Ltd (FRFU) convened its General Assembly yesterday, bringing together representatives from 29 member unions to chart the future of rugby in Fiji.

The four-hour session was chaired by newly elected Board Chairman John Sanday alongside a seven-member Board of Directors, who led discussions on key priorities such as governance, player welfare, grassroots development, and innovative strategies to grow the sport.

A significant highlight was the introduction of an online player registration system aimed at enhancing transparency and streamlining administrative processes. Efforts to bolster women’s rugby pathways were also prioritized, alongside plans to realign the 2025 rugby calendar to better align with international schedules.

The assembly unveiled a bold vision for the sport, including launching a semi-professional rugby competition in 2026, emphasizing the importance of player welfare with improved insurance and safety measures. Discussions also focused on leveraging land assets to develop rugby infrastructure and securing sponsorships for competitions like the Marama Cup.

The FRFU also revealed plans to integrate sports tourism and climate change initiatives into rugby programs, aiming to create broader social and economic impacts. These forward-looking strategies signal an exciting era for Fijian rugby.
