Taylan May Cleared to Play: Wests Tigers Eye Blockbuster Move for Ex-Panthers Star
After being sidelined by the NRL’s no-fault stand-down policy, former Penrith Panthers outside back Taylan May has been cleared to resume his career. This development follows the withdrawal of domestic violence charges against him, which had put his playing future on hold. Despite maintaining his innocence throughout the legal proceedings, an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) will remain in place for at least six months.
May, 23, had been a key player for the Panthers, making 30 appearances and earning a spot in Samoa’s squad for the 2022 Rugby League World Cup. His contract with Penrith, initially set to run until the end of the 2026 NRL season, was terminated following his legal issues. Now, with no charges pending, he is eligible to return to the NRL, and several clubs have shown interest in securing his services.
Among these clubs, the Wests Tigers have emerged as a strong contender. According to The Daily Telegraph, the Tigers are monitoring May’s situation closely. Their interest coincides with uncertainty surrounding centre Justin Olam’s future. Olam is set to meet with NRL medical staff to determine whether injuries will force him into medical retirement. If so, the Tigers could receive salary cap relief of $400,000 this season and $600,000 for 2026, providing them with financial flexibility to make a move for May.
May’s potential return also aligns with his older brother Terrell May’s aspirations. Terrell, who currently plays in the NRL, recently expressed his desire to share the field with Taylan and their other brother, Tyrone May, who is off-contract with Hull Kingston Rovers at the end of the Super League season.
“I would be lying if I said I didn’t want my brothers to play with me. That’s the goal,” Terrell told Zero Tackle. “We’ve only played together once in a knockout competition, but I want it to happen on a big stage.”
With May now eligible to resume his career, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining where he lands next.
