NRL Scandal: Roosters Bosses Under Investigation for Referee Confrontation in Vegas

The NRL’s Integrity Unit has launched an investigation into Sydney Roosters chairman Nick Politis and board member Mark Bouris following allegations of referee abuse during the NRL Vegas Nines competition. The incident in question occurred on February 28 after a match between the LA Roosters and Brisbane Veterans. Referee Mitch James reported that he was confronted by Politis and Bouris, who voiced their frustration over his officiating.

According to James, Bouris criticized his performance, stating, “I’ve seen a lot of football, and that was a disgrace! You reffed us out of the game.” He also alleged that Politis made additional remarks before the ground manager stepped in to defuse the situation. Later that day, James was unexpectedly removed from his role as a touch judge for the Greece vs. USA match, a decision he suspects was influenced by the earlier confrontation.

Bouris acknowledged that he and Politis spoke to James but denied any abusive or threatening behavior. He insisted they maintained a respectful distance and did not use offensive language. Bouris further revealed that they had submitted a formal complaint about the standard of refereeing.

The NRL confirmed that its Integrity Unit is currently gathering all relevant information regarding the complaint to determine the appropriate course of action.
