Tedesco Turns Back the Clock in Roosters Masterclass, Reignites Origin Debate
James Tedesco turned in a vintage performance for the Sydney Roosters on Thursday night, silencing doubters and reigniting talk around his potential Origin return. In a high-pressure match against the Dolphins, the veteran fullback was instrumental, running for a staggering 212 metres and tallying two line breaks, two try assists, and ten tackle breaks. With playmaker Sandon Smith forced off with an injury just six minutes into the game, the Roosters faced a major challenge. But it was Tedesco who stepped up—not just with his performance, but as a leader guiding rookie halfback Hugo Savala through the contest.
Rugby league commentator Phil Gould praised the Roosters skipper for his composure and support of Savala. “When their young five-eighth Sandon Smith went down, that could’ve been trouble. But Tedesco was immense. Everywhere young Hugo Savala went, Tedesco was there—talking to him, guiding him, always close,” Gould said. “His own output was extraordinary. A stunning game from the captain.”
The timing of Tedesco’s resurgence is significant, with State of Origin selections looming. While Dylan Edwards remains the frontrunner for the NSW fullback spot, especially after a strong 2023 campaign, Tedesco’s dominant outing has reopened the debate. Speaking to Nine’s Danika Mason post-match, Tedesco admitted he isn’t losing sleep over the Blues selection.
“For years, being the incumbent meant there was always talk about others in form. Now I’m on the other side, and I’ve let that pressure go,” Tedesco said. “I’m just focused on enjoying my footy and leading the Roosters. It’s Dylan’s spot right now, and I respect that.”
Even so, performances like this make it hard to ignore the seasoned star. With Origin around the corner, selectors may soon face a very difficult decision.
