Gilbert Arenas recently shared an outlandish theory on how the Milwaukee Bucks discovered Giannis Antetokounmpo.

While most fans know and believe that the Bucks were the only team willing to take a risk by drafting a lesser-known Giannis, “Agent Zero” claimed on his podcast that, ironically, the Atlanta Hawks had spotted him first. Moreover, they were so determined to acquire the Greek Forward that they went to extreme lengths to keep him hidden from other franchises.

ATL hid Giannis for a year

On an episode of his podcast, Gilbert revealed an interesting fact about the Hawks’ desperation to draft Antetokounmpo in 2013. According to Arenas, the franchise kept quiet about the 6’11” prodigy so he would avoid the spotlight of all the other teams, and fall into their lap.

“The Atlanta Hawks secretly had Giannis in somebody’s basement, and they thought nobody knew about him. So, they were basically trying to figure out how to get him to 15,” Gil said. “They said he was working out in somebody’s basement, so nobody could see who he was.”

How the plan derailed for ATL

According to Arenas’ story, the plan ultimately unraveled when a fired Hawks employee allegedly became a “snitch,” revealing all of their plans to the Bucks, who, coincidentally, held the 15th overall pick ahead of Atlanta’s 17th and 18th selections.

“How he got to Milwaukee is one of the… I don’t know if he was on the coaching staff or the management in Atlanta, got fired. Went to Milwaukee, ‘They got a mf hiding over there in the basement.’ They had the pick before Atlanta,” Gilbert added. “‘They got a young kid out of Greece, sitting in the basement down there.’ How mad you gotta be for holding him hostage for a year.”

Obviously, Arenas was being pretty metaphoric with his “basement” and “hostage” terms, but you could see a former Hawks employee exacting evening in such a manner. The Bucks are definitely thankful they were the ones that hit the lottery and stole “The Greek Freak.”
