Known for his role on the popular BBC show Big Break alongside Jim Davidson during the 1990s, Virgo became a household name. His voice echoed through snooker broadcasts, and his witty commentary and in-depth knowledge made him a fan favorite.
In tribute to this legend of the sport, the John Virgo Trophy brings together some of the biggest names in snooker today. Players like Ronnie O’Sullivan, Stephen Hendry, Mark Williams, and John Higgins will compete at the Goffs venue in County Kildare, Ireland, this weekend. These four iconic players, with 21 world titles between them, are sure to offer a display of snooker at its finest, showcasing the brilliance and precision for which they are known.
The event is the brainchild of Jason Francis, a close colleague of John Virgo, who worked alongside him for years. Francis, also the founder of Snooker 900, has introduced a unique format to the tournament to honor Virgo’s innovative spirit. Snooker 900, which was created in 2022, is designed to make the game more dynamic and fast-paced by reducing safety play and encouraging quicker action. The format has specific rules, including a 900-second (15-minute) timer for each frame, a 20-second shot clock, and the requirement that every shot either pots a ball or makes contact with a cushion.
If a foul occurs, the player is given the advantage of ball-in-hand, allowing them to place the cue ball anywhere on the table. The frame concludes either when the timer runs out or when all the balls are potted. The John Virgo Trophy will take place on April 11 and 12, bringing the snooker community together in a fitting celebration of Virgo’s life and contributions to the sport.
