Shams Charania Shares Lakers’ Focus Ahead of Trade Deadline

With the NBA trade deadline fast approaching on February 6th, the Los Angeles Lakers find themselves in an advantageous position to strengthen their roster as they aim for a championship run.

The Lakers are currently 27-19, holding 5th place in the Western Conference, just half a game behind the top-seeded Denver Nuggets. The team is led by 40-year-old LeBron James, who continues to defy expectations, and Anthony Davis, who has been playing at an MVP-caliber level this season, although he is presently sidelined due to an abdominal injury.

Despite their strong performance, the Lakers recognize the need for a few adjustments to truly contend for an NBA title. As the trade deadline nears, the team’s focus has been on increasing depth, especially in the center position. Shams Charania of ESPN reports that both James and Davis have expressed their desire to add a center to enhance the team’s play in the paint.

“From what I understand, the center spot is a top priority for both Anthony Davis and LeBron James,” Charania said. “They don’t want the Lakers to jeopardize their future in the process, but they are looking to be aggressive. They want to be active before the trade deadline to acquire a couple of key pieces. Anthony Davis told me, ‘I think we’re one or two pieces away from a championship.'”

Davis has long called for the addition of a traditional center to aid in rebounding and rim protection, and with his ongoing injury concerns, the Lakers could benefit from more depth at the position. The team has several trade assets available, including Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, Max Christie, and a collection of future draft picks.

One potential fit for the Lakers is Robert Williams III from Portland. Renowned for his shot-blocking and exceptional rebounding skills, Williams could provide the defensive presence needed to complement Davis.

Another option could be Jonas Valančiūnas from Washington, a proficient low-post player and strong rebounder who would immediately strengthen the Lakers’ paint presence.

The challenge for the Lakers will be finding the right balance between making a significant move now while preserving future flexibility.
